A palette of greens and rusts spreads the length of the coastline, and fields are dotted with hay bales and edged with stone walls built to resist armies. Overhead, occasional peregrine falcons and kites catch the thermals. Church ruins from the fifth century host congregations of livestock. Just half an hour south of Dublin, the Wicklow Mountains have enjoyed the attentions of the film industry.
The landscape played a role in Braveheart as well as Michael Collins, and the area is now the backdrop to a TV series called Vikings.
Any trip here must begin with a visit to Powerscourt Gardens, ranked in the top three gardens of the world by National Geographic, and the property of the Slazenger family. The estate is wonderfully varied, from the sweeping Italian Renaissance terrace to the little bridges and willows of the Japanese water garden.
Sugarloaf mountain in western Co Wicklow makes a spectacular backdrop to a bike ride. A minute drive and you are at Powerscourt Waterfall.

The Waterford Coast is a maze of spectacular sea cliffs, publicly accessible little beaches, coves, streams feeding into the ocean, sea stacks and tide pools. The fun seaside resort of Tramore is a 30 mile drive away. There are rides for the kids, good restaurants and junk food bonanzas, a vast beach and a Swim World with pools, slides and artificial waves.
Hook is the oldest continually occupied lighthouse in the world. We visited the Cove today. We love this beach, clean, tranquil and easy to walk. The big drawback in the Public Toilets are not open. Last time we visited they were closed also. Read more. Date of experience: July Helpful Share.

T-Bay Surf and Wildlife Centre is Ireland's only on beach, purpose built surfing facility. They also provide guided eco hikes in Tramore, County Waterford. The flat grassy spot is on the bank of the Camcor River is the perfect place to spend a night. Adirondack shelters originate, as you might have guessed, from the Adirondack Mountains of New York state.
The shelters consist of three sides, a pitched roof and a raised platform floor that sleeps people. A few shelters of this kind have been built on Coillte land by Mountain Meitheal which is a group of environmental volunteers. The site has a fire pit, a picnic table, a water butt and is free to camp at.
The water, however, might need to get treated before drinking. Two similar huts can be found on the Wicklow Way at Mucklagh and Mullacor. A post shared by Jeremy Simpson???? Glenbarrow is one of the most scenic parts of Slieve Bloom with its dramatic valley and waterfalls, and this camping spot is also a little more rugged than the other ones in the same area.
This wild camping is situated just a short walk from the Slieve Blooms Way, about metres downstream from the first bridge on the river Barrow. This is a sunny camp spot is flat and sheltered by a big stone wall. There are no facilities here and campfires are not permitted. More info: Glenbarrow Wild Camping.
